The Pench Tiger Reserve is a densely forested area and is a part of Project Tiger since 1992. It is the 19th Project Tiger Reserve in the country. The reserve derives its name from the Pench River which flows north to south within the reserve. The forest belt of the reserve sprawls over an area of around 299 sq km, encompassing parts of Seoni, Balaghat and Nagpur districts.

This reserve is dominated by southern tropical dry deciduous teak and southern tropical mixed deciduous forest. Trees like moyan, aonla, mokha, tendu, skiras, bija, achar, garari and bamboo can be seen in the reserve.

Plantations of ghont, baranga, amaltas, kihamali, khair and palas can also be spotted here. In addition, 39 species of mammals, 3 species of amphibians, 13 species of reptiles and more than 170 species of birds inhabit this reserve.

The reserve provides habitat to leopard, jungle cat, small Indian civet, palm civet, chital and sambar. Wild dogs can be easily spotted near Chhedia, Jamtara, Bodanala and Pyorthadi. Wild boar and sloth bear inhabit the hilly and rocky areas of the forests.

It is said that after reading the description of the flora and fauna of this reserve in wildlife books dating back to the 17th century, Rudyard Kipling developed the plot of the famous Jungle Book.
